Summer of Glory
19 January - 2 February
Bound for Glory
The 2019 TAB Summer of Glory promises three huge weekends of Group 1 trots action, culminating with the $500,000 Del-Re National A.G. Hunter Cup on Saturday night February 2 at Tabcorp Park Melton.
The hits will keep coming in Victoria’s TAB Summer Of Glory, with the Grand Circuit racing to be coupled with great aged racing. Here are the highlights.
It’s not often the undercard threatens top billing but the great depth in the aged racing ranks will ensure they are prominent in discussion come the TAB Summer Of Glory.
If the 2017-18 bouts were any indication we are in for a thrilling showdown in the $200,000 VHRSC Victoria Derby, whose heats will feature on PETstock Ballarat Pacing Cup night before the January 26 final.
The latter is headlined by the $250,000 Great Southern Star, which is likely to appropriately attract a star-studded field of trotters hardened by the first TAB Inter Dominion Trotting Championship since 2012.
But many will be trackside for the likely showdown between Emma Stewart’s trio Hurricane Harley, Centenario and late comer Demon Delight, while strong All Stars representation could pour fuel on the fire, with Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen’s team including Sires Stakes stunner Ultimate Sniper and placegetter Jesse Duke.
And the good times will likely roll on in the 4YO Bonanza, most recently the plaything of Victorian Horse of the Year Jilliby Kung Fu and all conquering Lazarus.
With a berth in Menangle’s $200,000 Chariots Of Fire again in the balance, the $100,000 Group 1 could well form one of the races of the year if the region’s leading four-year-olds put their best foot forward. We don’t have to cast our mind back far to savour the excitement created by last season’s three-year-old Breeders Crown when Ride High stole the march on his star-studded rivals.
Vengeance will be in play should the likes of Colt Thirty One, Poster Boy, Major Times, Diamonds N Cash, Maraetai, Ignatius and Konan reboot, then there are Inter Dominion focused Kiwis Spankem and Pats Delight who could also make a play.
Add in the $100,000 Ladyship Cup and $50,000 Casey Classic middle-distance pace and January 26 is a date to be circled.
And that’s just night one of the TAB Summer Of Glory.
Del-Re National A. G. Hunter Cup, Victoria’s annual Grand Circuit pinnacle, looms ever large on the February 2 program with the $500,000 pace to add another legendary chapter. Lazarus, Bling It On, Smolda, Arden Rooney and Christen Me are but the fifth latest triumphants, but those who have come before – Pure Steel, Gammalite, Popular Alm, Preux Chevalier to name a few – are a who's who.
Who will join them? We’ll find out on Saturday February 2 at Tabcorp Park, when the $50,000 V L Dullard Trotters Cup will also be run and won on the most magical of Melton nights when the sun dips into a purple haze and the stars step out.
There will be no shortage of fun with roving entertainment trackside, bustling bars with high profile luminaries, DJ on the lawn, the ever-popular after-parties and of a plethora of children’s entertainment options will ensure the 2019 Summer of Glory will have everyone smiling.
